The Reserve which incorporates the Bushmans River, launched in 1999 as a joint conservation venture and today is home to the Big Five. Six independently owned lodges are managed by the descendants of the original families ensuring a historic perspective to your safari adventure.

  • All Lodges offer swimming pools set in lovely gardens.
  • Game Drives in to the Reserve (approx 4 hours). Please note there is a minimum age of 6 at those Lodges where children are welcome (Leeuwenbosch also has activities for younger children).
  • Canoeing and cruises on the Bushmans River (all ages).

Bars & Restaurants

  • Resident chefs will treat you to gastronomic delights presented with African flair in a variety of atmospheric settings.
  • Leeuwenbosh is famous for it’s small but perfectly formed cellar ‘pub’!

Overview

The information below primarily relates to Leeuwenbosch Lodge where families are particularly welcome and which operates a special children’s programme, although there are also no age limits at Woodbury, Reed Vally Inn and Carnarvon Dale. Children age 9 + are welcome at Safari Lodge whereas the Bush Lodge has a minimum age of 14.

Looking after younger guests

Children are welcome to use the swings and play equipment of the family.

Children’s Meals

  • Children under 12 generally eat at 7 pm (before parents) and then watch a movie whilst the adults relax (if they are not tucked up in bed).
    *’Family’ dinners can also be arranged on request.
  • Bespoke Meals on request

Babysitting & Supervised activities

  • Children age 6 plus are welcome on the ‘adult’ game drives.
  • Children’s game drives (for those under 6 years) can be arranged on request at time of booking (separate or parent may accompany). These are shorter than the ‘adult’ game drives and do not approach dangerous game so closely.
  • A special 3 day Family Programme for children of all ages includes educational nature walks and game drives as well as visits to a Xhosa Village and baking.
  • Babysitting available on request at Leeuwenbosch, Woodbury and Carnarvon Dale.

Safety

  • Animals: The lodge is fenced with plenty of garden space for play.
  • Water: The Swimming pool is the only deep water on the site.

Room types

Safari Lodge: The Lodge is tucked away in a valley of indigenous bush at the northern boundary of the Reserve nestled between Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park (guests have the option of booking the 3 day Tusker Package which, along with activities on Amakhala, includes a game drive into Addo and a visit to The Born Free Foundation). This intimate thatched lodge with its unique air-conditioned safari huts offers all the comforts of a luxury five star lodge. In addition to the four original safari huts there are 7 new luxury suites complete with separate lounge areas with canvas drop blinds, private plunge pools, outside showers and double baths.

Leeuwenbosch: The historical colonial Manor House, built in 1908, has a selection of comfortable rooms whilst the Shearer’s Lodge close by has been converted into f4 luxury en-suite rooms including a delightful Honeymoon Suite.

Woodbury Lodge: Guests are accommodated in six comfortably appointed stone-and-thatch sleeping lodges, each with air-conditioning and en-suite bathroom. It’s location set against a clfiff above the Bushman’s River valley guarantees some spectacular views.

Reed Valley Inn: This colonial lodge encompasses South Africa’s historical past and provides a personalised homely experience. Each of the 4 en-suite rooms, nestled in a farmyard, have a separate entrance onto a private patio.

Reed Valley Bush Lodge: A new African retreat on Amakhala Game Reserve with 5 star status. Built in the bush at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, each of the four air-conditioned rooms overlook a watering point with big sky views. All buildings are thatched roofs, tented walls and wooden floors with private pluge pools and atmospheric fireplace.

Carnarvon Dale: This 3 star graded en-suite accommodation consists of the 1820 Settler farmhouse, the Bottom House, and an elegantly restored early Edwardian cottage, the Top House.

Family

  • There are several family/inter-leading family rooms and suites in the Manor House at Leeuwenbosch.
  • Several family Rooms are also available at Woodbury.
  • There is a family suite at Carnarvon Dale available on request.

Rates vary according to your choice of Lodge, so please enquire. As a guide, raters are from £182 per adult sharing on an All Inclusive Basis at Leeuwenbsoch, Woodbury and Reed Valley Inn (All Meals and 2 reserve activities per day) valid 01/05/10 – 31/05/10 & 01/08/10 – 30/09/10

  • Under 2’s free of charge
  • Rate from £91 for children age 2 – 11 years sharing at Leeuwenbosch.
  • Children in own suite pay adult rates.

The Reserve has a wide ranging Social Development Programme in place, with the aim of creating an environment where all staff are committed and able to make a contribution from which they will ultimately benefit. Specific projects include the support of a Primary School on the Reserve and on-going training for all staff, enabling them to take on new positions of responsibility.
